There’s something about lights. Not the big street lamps or football stadiums lights. But the little ones. Fairy lights. The type people use for decorating their yards, houses, and rooms. There is something soft and secretive about little lights. They make a place warmer. They create a window into a snapshot of the world—like the joy of a Christmas memory. It’s like humans tried to capture the innocent essence of fireflies or the feeling of looking at stars from a few light years away. We wanted our own little versions of outer space, warmth, or familiarity. People don’t hang up fairy lights because they need them to see in the dark; they hang fairy lights to evoke a certain atmosphere or feeling or the idea of warmth. We wanted to capture jolts of electricity to make our homes a little friendlier and a little more welcoming. I am filled with wonder because humans love to take little bits of the universe and try to wrap it up and hold it as close as possible. Humans reach out to the stars and try to bring them home, and I think that’s wonderful.
