I have been thinking about curiosity. What makes me curious? One of the top answers for me is travel. Seeing new places. Different cultures. Different parts of the world.
I am especially inspired to wonder by nature. Trees that are unfamiliar cause me to wonder about their names. The deep red dirt of Hawaii made me think about soil and if it was similar to the deep red dirt of Ethiopia. My mind wonders if or how places are connected. Hawaii also had a flower/tree that took me back to my trip to Africa. It is something I ponder but leave in the wonder stage, it doesn’t take me to googling or researching the answer; it is just a meandering conversation at best or a passing thought.
The beauty of nature brings such joy and wonder. The colors. The creativity of the creator. Contrast of new places heightens my curiosity but I also practice taking notice right where I live. There was a flower that would always bloom outside my home in NC in September, it was a unique red flower and I loved it not only because of its beauty but because of its timing....right when all the leaves were starting to change colors, a flower that blooms. After a couple years I searched out what it was, a red spider lily.
Seasons will definitely bring me to wonder. I love the variety. Fall and Spring.
I recently moved to NY. The trees. The mountains. The views. They are familiar and new all at once. Familiar but variations from our last home. The massiveness of the trees is awe-inspiring. All the various greens....and yet the anticipation of the leaves changing is in my mind. I have never lived in the mountains. The view of the Hudson. It doesn’t get old.
The ocean is one of the most consistent awe-inspiring places throughout my life. Ever since I was a young girl my family would take trips to the beach. It was the only place we vacationed. I have gone on countless walks along the shore looking for shells, marveling at the shore birds and mussels that burrow into the sand. I can sit on the beach for days just watching the waves. The vastness of it. The tides. How it is ever changing but consistent. As I have traveled to different beaches, the sand gets my attention as well. The coarse or fine grains. The difference in color and consistency causes me to explore closer.
Beach. Mountains. Forest. Rivers. When I am in nature my curiosity is high.
